Will The Stimulus Help Cities Turn Their Trash Into Energy?

With virtually every city in the country pitching ideas to the President in a bid to get a piece of the $800 billion stimulus package, a number of ideas have been laid on the table.  A number of these ideas revolve around renewable energy and achieving energy independence.  While some ideas are not much more than experiments, the impact may actually be beneficial, and a couple of these projects even aim to reduce landfill off-gassing and accumulation.

The first project to be mentioned comes from Beaumont, Texas.  The government of Beaumont is asking for 5 million dollars of stimulus money to create a landfill hydrogen plant.  This plant aims to utilize solar energy to convert methane emitted at landfills into hydrogen and natural gas, which can be used as a source of energy. 

The project would employ fifty people, but draws significant opposition because the process is unproven and largely untested.  It is up to government officials to weigh the possible benefits of the program, considering both the chance of success and the environmental impact if the process is both achievable and economically viable.  The process has been implemented at a pilot plant in Regina, Saskatchewan in Canada and reports both success and a need for further improvement to decrease costs and increase efficiency.

The second project to be mentioned has actually been proposed by a number of cities.  Stamford, Connecticut is one of the cities proposing the idea, and is requesting $50 million dollars while promising 75 new jobs.  The money is being requested to build a biomass gasification plant to convert waste into energy.  Biomass gasification is actually considered one of the most economically and technically convincing possibilities for creating a carbon neutral economy and a renewable source of energy due to the fact that the process removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and does not emit greenhouse gases. 

Biomass gasification works by heating landfill waste to create renewable energy.  The process also greatly reduces landfill waste, as the resulting ash occupies only a small percentage of the mass of the original trash.  While the technology still has room for improvements in energy costs to run and maintain, it is an excellent and necessary step toward energy independence.

These are but two of the bills on the table for review by the Federal government.  While each holds its fair share of supporters as well as opposition, it is ultimately in the hands of the United States government to decide if either bill will pass.  As the economy continues to decline, there is hope that the new administration will put considerable attention and funding into alternative energy and that the sheer number of bills regarding various energy technologies will show the government that people are ready to move forward. 

The outcome of the stimulus bill will likely be seen shortly as the administration has been in a hurry to distribute the funding in a rush to stimulate spending and create jobs.  What will remain to be seen for some time, however, is the ultimate level of success and advancement the country makes based on the results of some of the energy forward ideas being pushed through by the stimulus bill.

Renewable Energy - Lesson 7 - Wind Generators

Almost every day, one can find an article online or on the news or in print about the environment, living “green”, pollution and the changing climate. While these articles deal with environmental issues on large scale perspectives, there are a number of aspects of the current state of the economy and environment that affect and are influenced by the average middle class citizen.

A good example of a current economic and environmental trend today is the growing popularity of the use of renewable energy sources to provide some if not all of the electrical power in private homes. While solar power is a very popular alternative renewable energy source, many people are also turning to wind power and wind generators to provide them with affordable electricity.

In many Midwest states, one can see examples of the large electric cooperatives using wind power to generate significant amounts of electricity. This wind power is produced by large “farms” of massive wind generators. These generators are essentially oversized propellers mounted on top of very tall towers. The wind turns the propellers which provides the kinetic energy which is turned into electricity.

All of these large generator farms are located in rural or semi rural areas. However, it is possible for people who live in towns and cities to have efficient wind generators. The residential wind generator is simply a downsized version of the larger generator. Most residential wind generators are mounted on top of 20 to 30 foot tall towers or on top of shorter towers mounted on the roof of the house. The tower is much less obtrusive than one would think and many are painted to blend in with the color scheme of the house. In some cases, zoning laws might restrict exactly how tall of a tower one may have, but in almost all cases the wind generator can be adapted to conform to the regulations.

Just as with solar panels, the wind generator can be tied into the house’s electrical system and can provide electrical power directly to the house. While it is not generally advisable to try to go off the grid with a wind generator, one will usually be surprised at how much power it can produce on even a fairly calm day. The power the wind generator provides will be applied as a credit on the house’s electric bill, and in many cases will be sufficient to zero out the bill. This can save a family thousands of dollars per year and also has the effect of reducing pollution by indirectly reducing the amount of fossil fuel needed to power the electrical grid.

In all, installing and using a residential wind generator is a smart move for financial and for environmental reasons. With the savings one will get from the reduction in utility costs, many people will be able to recover the cost of the system in the first year alone, and in some cases, there are tax credits available for people who make energy efficient improvements to their homes.

People have been aware that the sun’s energy can be harnessed to power various devices and machines for years, but it is not until recently that the technology and the motivation has pushed people to seriously consider solar energy as a viable power source.

With the current state of the economy and with the growing move toward a more environmentally responsible lifestyle, many people are considering various forms of renewable energy and “green living” principals. Solar power is usually at the top of the list when it comes to renewable energy sources. Solar power has been used for years by the government and various businesses, but it has only recently come into the mainstream for the everyday average household.

In almost any area of the country it is possible to dramatically cut one’s electric bill by installing and maintaining solar panels. Some people are even able to go entirely off the grid and power their homes completely independently of the traditional local electric company, all by solar power. Alternative Energy Group Advocates Use of Wind Power

As the crucial voting for energy legislation draws nearer, the American Wind Energy Association or AWEA will be taking a majors step towards advocating the use of wind power for energy consumption. The said group will launch a massive ad campaign today. The said ads are aimed towards supporting the move to have a renewable electricity standard or RES. The RES being debated on widely is a mechanism which is based on the market. The RES calls for a fixed portion of the country’s source of electricity to be produced using renewable resources. Today, 25 states have already enacted renewable energy standards. But experts agree that a national RES will be much more beneficial.

This week, the House of Representative will decide on the matter. This issue is being targeted early on because of the increasing awareness to the threat of global warming.

There have been studies conducted to find out the benefits of an RES. According to results of these studies, an RES in place will slow down global warming. With renewable energy sources being tapped, less petroleum fuel will be burned. That translates to less greenhouse gases. This move will be beneficial in the future as automakers are now experimenting with vehicles which run on electricity alone. Automobiles like the Acura CL compressor -equipped luxury car are considered as one of the biggest producers of harmful greenhouse gases.

Another benefit of an RES is that it creates jobs. According to a study conducted by the Union of Concerned Scientists, an RES will help create about 185,000 American jobs. Wind and solar energy are expected to be the biggest source of alternative energy. With a national RES, these industries will experience a boom thus creating jobs for Americans.

Studies also reported that an RES would “revitalize rural America”. According to the studies, rural land owners will be able to take about $3,000 to $8,000 per turbine annually while still being able to work their land. These benefits will be deliberated for sure before the House of Representatives decide on the issue.
